Biography

Pre-solo period

Before going solo Candy Lo was the lead vocalist in Hong Kong based rock band . Before the band released any material, they used to perform independently of Black & Blue as a band as well.

In 1995 Black & Blue released their first record titled ''Hope In Just One Day''. A year later, in 1996 they released their second album eponymously titled Black & Blue. The former contains songs mostly sung in English while the latter is completely in Cantonese. Stepping away from English and singing completely in Cantonese had been a decision made in concordance with their record label so as to make themselves more understandable to fans. Lo wrote the lyrics to their songs herself.

Solo career

In 1998 Candy Lo was signed to Sony Music, thus starting her solo career. Her first release under Sony was an EP called ''Don't have to be too perfect'' . For this record she won a Golden Award in the same year. The style of this release continued on from her - past with Black & Blue. In winter 1998, Candy released a second record called ''Miao'', the title of which refers to Candy's love of cats and how "they listen while people sometimes don't." The album didn't sell as much copies as expected. Producer Kubert Leung blamed the public, who "failed to grasp the concept of the album".

Lo's 3rd album, ''Get Close To Candy Lo'' , released in 1999, set itself apart from the mainstream music that year by adding a philharmonic orchestra to her mix of rock and pop.

In 2000 Candy Lo again released 2 records, ''Colour Release'' and ''Muse''.

In July 2001 Candy Lo released ''Fantasy''. Fantasy contained the radio hit ''The Sword And Spear Don't Enter'' as well as ''Call'' , the theme song for the movie ''''. Lo's 1st compilation album titled ''Like To Love'' was also released in the year.

The release of her 2002 album ''Appreciate The Taste Of Life'' marked Candy's career with her first smash hit ''Beautiful Break-up in which she collaborated with fellow singer Lee Hom Wang.

On April 26, 2003 ''Candy's Airline'' is was released. In that same year Candy released a concept album titled ''Flower Talk'' , which combined mellow as well as more upbeat tunes with a classical hint to them.

Three months later Candy Lo released ''True Music 1st Flight Live 2003'', a collection of live renditions of songs released between 1998 and 2003 plus a few covers such as Wong Jim's ''Forget Him'' , made famous by Teresa Teng. All of these were performed during a concert in Hong Kong.

''Evolution Theory'' released in 2005, was the last album she recorded before parting company with Sony. It is less mainstream than her previous two albums. However, like ''Flower Talk'', this album deals with spiritual issues such as the uncertainty of the future in ''Junk Girl Of Dystopia'' and departure in ''Sutra For Seeing Souls Off'' .

On June 11 2007, Candy Lo released her 10th album "Process" after joining her new record company "WOW Music". Candy Lo is the first artist to release USB flash memory digital album in Asia. Process contained radio hit "Can't Even Love". Her mandarin song "Run Slowly" is also available at Candy's website at http://candylo.hk which has a hit rate of more than 200,000 times.

Kelvin Kwan

Kelvin Kwan is an artist of Go East, a subdivision of Universal Music.

Biography

Kelvin Kwan was born and raised in Canada; his father was a former executive of PolyGram and a friend of Hong Kong pop singer Alan Tam. As a result, Tam became Kwan's godfather. Also, he is the nephew of Teddy Robin Kwan. In 2004, during the summer vacation after his first year of university in Toronto, he went on a trip to Taiwan; after a night of karaoke with his father's ex-coworkers, Kwan was offered an audition, and was signed to Universal Music's Taiwan division. A year later, he moved to Hong Kong. Tam's relationship with Kwan continued to prove a boost to Kwan's career; in August 2006, the pair recorded a music video of the duet "''Big Cry Baby'' ", which secured Kwan's popularity in the Hong Kong music industry. However, Tam has not been reticent in pointing out Kwan's flaws and errors publicly; in a September 2006 interview with the ''Sing Tao Daily'', he criticised Kwan's public speaking abilities and suggested he concentrate harder on singing during performances; Kwan reportedly felt awkward and hurt by Tam's words. Regardless, Kwan still credits a great deal of his success to Tam, claiming that he would not be where he is today without his help and guidance.

Kellyjackie

Jackie Chan Hiu-ki a.k.a. Kellyjackie is a Hong Kong amateur pop singer and a member of a called the Royals. With her childhood idol being Kelly Chen, she incorporates "Kelly" into her nickname.

Prior to 2005, she was a secondary school student. She has been an internet singer for six years. She started off from the age of 13 by singing other singers songs. After about one year, she started composing songs. The first song composed by her was ''Lucky voice'' which, among her other songs, was released on the internet. In January 2005, she composed the song ''He invites me to Disneyland'' during her preparation for the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination as a way of reducing stress, inspired by the classic fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty and the princely romance.

She uploaded her song ''He invites me to Disneyland'' to her band's forum, her Xanga site, i010.com and also cmidi.com for free downloading by internet users. Surprisingly, the song spread over via the internet within a few weeks. For some time, the song ranked number 1 among Yahoo! Hong Kong's Top Searches . Some DJs also introduced the song over radio broadcasting. Many were delighted by her talent considering her age and limited experience in this area, although some also criticised her for her unsophisticated singing skills which arouse doubts about whether she could be coined a "singer". Nevertheless, the song eventually became extremely popular and widely praised in Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong and landed her a 5-year recording contract.

To celebrate the opening of the Hong Kong Disneyland, the Walt Disney Company published the ''Hong Kong Disneyland -The Grand Opening Celebration Album'' and invited both Kellyjackie and Kelly Chen to perform the song ''He invites me to Disneyland'', leading to the advent of the duet version of the song.

Kay Tse

Kay Tse is a Hong Kong Cantopop singer. She was a newcomer to the music industry in 2005, and is known for her versatile vocal range and expertise in various music genres, especially in jazz.

Tse is yet to crack the main stream Cantopop market but many music industry insiders have tipped her singing ability to have big potential, and regard her as one of a new breed of "non-idol" singers who sell their singing ability rather than their looks.

Discovery

In 2002, when Tse was still a university student majoring in at the University of Hong Kong, she entered a university singing competition and won the first place. She then entered an inter-schools singing competition in 2003 and made the final five, impressing one of the judges Adrian Chou very much that he offered her a professional contract with his small music label called "Ban Ban Music". At that time Tse was working as a piano teacher.

Pre-debut

Before becoming an artist herself, Vidal had always enjoyed singing. Her voice came to the attention of renowned producer Mark Lui by chance when she recorded the backing vocals for one of mega star Leon Lai's songs in 2001. Vidal left a favourable impression on Lui, as upon Lui's stumbling across her voice he informed Leon, who in turn decided to offer Vidal a contract with Amusic , a newly-formed record label where Leon Lai is a major investor . As a result, Vidal became the first newcomer to sign for Amusic in 2004.

Music career

In her first concert, Janice stated that she was signed by Amusic around 2003. However Leon thought that she could not speak Cantonese properly back then and allocated her to work as an office assistant. Since Amusic only start operating from 28 July 2004, Janice might have actually worked for Paciwood Music and Entertainment Corporation instead of Amusic.

During 2004 Leon Lai transferred himself as a singer and management of Amusic, after Christmas 2004, Janice started catching the media's attention by covering in English one of Leon's essential tunes "Long Distance" on the radio. The cover song quickly became a hit. Some fans initially thought it was an overseas singer who was covering one of Leon's classic hits, but were surprised to find out the singer was an unknown Hong Kong rookie. Since it was Christmas in Hong Kong at the time, Vidal's first song was swiftly followed by a Christmas version of another Leon Lai cover "不可一世" . The Cantonese cover of "Long Distance" was aired on radio in Spring 2005 for the first time.

By April 2005, Vidal had become known as a mysterious singer who sung several cover versions of Leon Lai's songs, but whose face has never been shown in public. After roughly six months of radio publicity and building public anticipation, her face was finally unveiled when her debut album "Day & Night" was released on 13 April 2005. Fellow Cantopop singer, Justin Lo, was a big part of this album's production, and it soon became a hit. On 25 November 2005, Vidal released her second album "My Love", a rarity for a newcomer in Hong Kong's music industry.

She won all the newbies singers awards in 2005 that were awarded by Hong Kong media. They were Commercial Radio Hong Kong ''2005 Best Female Newbies - Gold'', RTHK ''2005 Best Female Newbies - Gold'', TVB ''2005 Best Female Newbies - Gold'' and Metro Radio ''I-Tech Metro Best Newbies 2005'' .

In mid-December 2005, Vidal was nominated by for the 2005 Hong Kong Music Award for Best Female Singer. A year later she got re-nominated by Commercial Radio Hong Kong and obtain Bronze in the Best Female singer category for 2006.

In an interview on Sina.com, Charles Ying stated that is not Vidal's first language and asked how Vidal dealt with this difficulty. Vidal admitted that she does not read Chinese but uses English to help her pronounce words that she sings in the recording studio, however she replied that she is quicker at recognising Chinese characters.

Vidal held her first concert series in Hong Kong from 29th March to 1st April, 2007, as part of her 4-night stint at Hong Kong Coliseum. It was called "My First Concert."

Janice's fourth studio album is set to be released in October 2008, with eager fans awaiting her return to the HK music scene.

Biography

Tsin Ting arrived in Hong Kong in 1949 with her brother after China came under communist rule. Left to fend for herself after her brother left for Taiwan, she sang in nightclubs to earn some money. In 1953, she recorded a Cantonese song, "One Day When We Were Young", on one side of a 78 but refused to do the other after finding her command of the language not up to par.

In 1954, she auditioned for EMI Pathé when they were recruiting new talent but was told by composer Yao Min who auditioned her that her vocals lacked power and energy. She was offered instead, a part in the chorus. In 1956, she was signed on as a solo artist after Miriam Wang, the chief executive, took notice of her. Her first record was two songs from the Shaw & Sons film ''Narcissus'', where she dubbed for actress Shih Ying. Her self-taught ability to read music was an added bonus as this saved valuable studio time. Film studios soon began using her to dub their musical films.

During a recording session, director Li Han-hsiang heard her singing at the studio, dubbing a song for actress Yu Suqiu in the Shaw movie ''Lady in Distress'' . Impressed with her voice, he had her dub for film star Lin Dai in his next film ''Diau Charn''. The film was a great success all over Southeast Asia and won several Asian Film Festival awards. Thereafter, when Li went on to film ''The Kingdom And The Beauty'', Tsin Ting was roped in to dub for Lin Dai once again.

Tsin Ting dubbed many of Shaw Brothers' Huangmei Opera movies from the 1950s to the 1960s. The most notable was ''The Love Eterne'' , where she sang for lead actress Betty Loh Ti in the role of Zhu Yingtai. The pathos and emotional impact of her singing, along with Loh Ti's excellent acting, moved viewers to tears. She left Shaw Studio as a contract singer in 1970 but continued recording albums on EMI in the 1970s, Wing Hung in the 1980s, and Polygram in the 1990s.

In 2000, Tsin Ting made a remarkable career resurgence with soldout concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum with Liu Yun, Tsui Ping and Wu Yingyin; she repeated the feat two years later with Liu, Wu and Billie Tam. In 2006, she was the guest singer at a Donald Cheung concert singing a famous Bai Guang classic and then duetting with Donald. This is available on DVD.
